Call for Submissions: ANIMATED MYTH-MAKING WITH MIKE MARYNIUK Workshop/Commission Project

Call for Artists to the Toronto Animated Image Society’s visiting artist workshop
ANIMATED MYTH-MAKING WITH MIKE MARYNIUK
Submission Deadline: Tuesday Feb 3, 2015

The Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) is seeking five media artists for our Animated Myth-Making workshop with visiting Winnipeg artist Mike Maryniuk (Cattle Call, The Yodeling Farmer). Under Mike’s instruction, from 10am-5pm on Saturday February 28, 2015 at the TAIS Studio, the five participants will learn how to use various animation techniques – including stop motion, pixilation, scratch animation, hand painted film stock mattes, light painting, turning video into paper print outs and other techniques.

Working with both film, video and whatever is at Value Village, participants will create short and dynamic one-minute imaginary propaganda films reminiscent of Canadian Heritage Minutes or the National Film Board’s classic 1970s Vignettes. The goal will be to shoot, animate, edit and output a one-minute vignette by the end of the workshop. The finished films will screen before the retrospective FISH ARMS AND FLYING SQUIRRELS: THE FILMS OF MIKE MARYNIUK later that night.

About Mike Maryniuk:
Mike Maryniuk was born in Winnipeg, but raised in the rural backcountry of Manitoba. A completely self-taught film virtuoso, Maryniuk’s film world is an inventive hybrid of Jim Henson, Norman McLaren and Stan Brakhage. Maryniuk’s films are a visual stew of hand-made ingredients and are full of home-cooked wonderfulness.

Select Filmography:

>The Yodeling Farmer (2011)
