TAIS is heading to OIAF to present \”Real Virtual Realty\” – the experimental VR work that takes you on a condo tour inside the minds of artists Brett Long + Winston Hacking. “Real Virtual Realty” is a handmade VR experience using time-lapse macro photography, claymation, miniatures, and puppetry that takes viewers on a simulated tour of Mondo Condo World — a surreal environment made up of wobbly foam buildings, Dadaist collage surfaces, and little clay men. Emerging from Brett Long’s previous work in mixing analogue animation with VR — the focus of his 2014-15 Artist Residency at the Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) — “Real Virtual Realty” pairs Long’s experimentation with Winston Hacking’s psychedelic art direction and the concrète sounds of mixed media artist Andrew Zukerman. This project was created in TAIS’ studios over 2016, with funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Brett Long is an independent stop motion filmmaker known for his high concept and innovative approach on music videos and live projections under the alias “Exploding Motor Car” – a Toronto artists collective. Brett has worked on both commercial and independent projects, and often works through experimentation with combining old with new in-camera film techniques.

Winston Hacking is a filmmaker and collage artist from Canada. His iconic techniques often masquerade as animation in an attempt to deceive the viewers eyes. His work has garnered millions of views online and has been featured in The New York Times, Vice, Rolling Stone, Adult Swim, and Vimeo Staff Picks. He is represented by Brainfeeder Films, a division of Flying Lotus\’s Brainfeeder music label based in Los Angeles, California.
