Workshop Description
This hands-on masterclass explores Rotoscoping, an animation technique involving tracing frame-by-frame from pre-recorded film or video (eg. as seen in “Take On Me” by A-ha, or Disney’s The Little Mermaid where live action is used as a reference). You will be provided with a dance footage to create an animation that is synchronized with music, and practice drawing techniques to achieve smooth movement and transitions.
Each class will reveal the process of creating rotoscope animations on 1. Computer via drawing tablet and stylus using Photoshop timeline. 2. Light Pad/ Table via the traditional media and After Effects, and 3. iPad via Apple Pencil using RoughAnimator. Master the tools, tricks and methodologies of this practical animation technique that draws from reality of live-action and use it with confidence in your work moving forward.
Materials:
1. Wacom tablet and stylus, Software: Adobe Photoshop
2. Light pad or light table, peg bars, hold puncher, scanner or camera and camera stand, Software: Adobe After Effects
3. iPad, Apple Pencil, Software: RoughAnimator app

Instructor
Iveta Karpathyova, B.Des., M.Des., is an animator and illustrator based in San Francisco, California. She is an instructor at UC Berkeley Extension where she created the course on Animation Design & Video Production. Iveta’s upcoming rotoscoping workshops are being taught at Google (Nov ’19), Skillshare (Dec ’19) and TAIS (Jan 20). Her award-winning rotoscope animations in films Phases of Dance (2017) and Prey (2019) screened at festivals including Hot Docs and International Festival of Animated Dance. She has created animated and illustrated content for clients including ESPN, L’Orèal, Variety Magazine, and Entertainment Weekly.
