Inspired by the aesthetics of ancient Greco-Roman pottery and historical narratives, Philip Ocampo will use his time in TAIS studio to produce a new work, entitled Space Song.

Space Song is an expanded animation that focuses on queer futurism and queer possibilities. Consisting of a hand-made 60cm tall ceramic vase, the project will use the animation principles of the zoetrope to animate the illustrations painted on it. Sectioned off into 10 horizontal rows, the vase tells the story of a fictionalized queer mythology, with space, techno-futurism, and ancient drawings as its visual motifs. When spun on a rotating surface under a strobe light the flat images come alive, singing the psalm of a fictional universe unknown to the present day. In comparison to the previous heteronormative imagery of Western narratives, Space Song acts as a found, celestial artefact that favours a hypothetical future, and loops itself through the trajectory of the canon of history itself. Its deviant existence calls into question the universal veracity of previously deciphered myths – there is a fantastic queer world hidden between the strata. The project is designed to work on multiple levels. The tangible, 3D object moves the animation beyond single channel but doesn’t omit it: you can view the work as a spinning vase or as a single channel video with detail footage all of the rows compiled onto a lateral timeline. Est. runtime: 2:00 mins

The British mathematician William Horner first created the animated zoetrope in 1934. An innovation beyond traditional mediums of the time, animation toys such as the preceding thaumatrope and phenakistoscope sparked a cultural movement that spiralled into the animations we see today. The premise was simple: the zoetrope expanded on the phenakistoscope’s illusion of speed and frame correspondences by translating it into three dimensions.

Philip will present a studio talk about his project at TAIS on September 27th, at 7pm. In 2018, Philip will exhibit Space Song in Xpace’s External Space in February until April. The work will be presented in two parts: half as video documentation, and half as a compilation of the painted frames.

Philip Ocampo’s artworks examine personal desire; from diaspora to emotional longing, from power to nostalgia. Primarily working in sculpture, installation and drawing, Ocampo uses mysticism, the ethereal, and the celestial as tools for existential introspection. His work often engages with concepts in relation to privilege, queerness, love, family, and the ways in which they intersect. Ocampo also works in freelance, thus making ceramics and illustrations in addition to the aforementioned. He received his BFA in Digital Painting and Expanded Animation from OCAD U in 2017.
